Waterton Lakes National Park is such a gem because it offers the stunning scenery that you expect from the Canadian Rocky Mountains while also being home to some unique landscapes. It is such a hidden gem here in Alberta, being much quieter than Banff or Jasper National Park. If you’re looking for a beautiful, quiet, and unforgettable wedding experience, then you should definitely start planning your Waterton elopement. I’ve spent some time hiking and backpacking in Waterton and each time I leave, I cannot wait to go back. This guide will give you everything you need to know about how to elopement in Waterton, I’m so excited to share!
Waterton Lakes National Park is Canada’s 4th National Park and it’s nestled in the Canadian Rockies along the border of Alberta, Canada, and Montana, USA.
Waterton is nestled in the southern Canadian Rockies along the border of Alberta, Canada, and Montana, USA. Waterton is about a 2 hour and 15 minute drive from YYC.
If you’re considering eloping in Waterton & you’ll be flying in, you should fly into the Calgary International Airport (YYC). Accessing Waterton is primarily via car, typically through routes that include Alberta’s Highway 6 or from the United States via Montana’s Highway 89. Keep in mind that winter weather conditions might affect accessibility, so plan accordingly.
Waterton itself is generally open year-round; however, specific facilities and services have seasonal availability and you’ll find most things closed for the winter. Summer, particularly from late May to early September, offers the fullest experience with more amenities accessible. From November to early April, most facilities in the townsite are closed but check the Parks Canada website for information to stay up to date. Many roads are also closed during the winter, limiting access to some areas.
Yes! To enter Waterton Lakes National Park you’ll need to purchase a Parks Canada pass which must be displayed in your vehicle. Passes can be purchased at the park gate, visitor centre or in advance of your visit online.
Absolutely! Waterton provides a perfect setting for weddings and elopements, so 10/10 DO IT.
It depends! Small gatherings of 25 people or less are permitted at many locations within the townsite and day use areas if you want an outdoor space. That being said, wedding ceremonies are not permitted in some areas to protect ecological integrity and promote positive visitor experience according to the Parks Canada website.

Waterton is truly so beautiful all year round so the best time of year to elope in Waterton largely depends on your preferences and the vibe you envision for your elopement. If you want nice warm weather, access to all the locations, and the most availability of amenities, then I would say the best time of the year to elope in Waterton is from late spring to late fall. Summer is incredible in Waterton, with a ton of wildflowers, beautiful meadows, and lots of really epic hiking locations. It does come with more crowds of course but with Waterton being one of the less visited National Parks in Alberta, it still has a peaceful and intimate vibe. The fall foliage in Waterton is really beautiful and the parks tourist traffic slows down. You can get the sweet spot here of a quieter park with all the amenities still open which is pretty great.
Once winter rolls around, the locations you can access become limited but there are still some really amazing spots to elope in Waterton in the winter. If you’re after a quiet, intimate, and snowy vibe, then winter in Waterton will be perfect for you. Here is a list of hotels, restaurants, and things to do that are open in Waterton in the winter!
It would be remiss if I didn’t mention the one thing about Waterton… it can be WINDY. So just know that and be ready to embrace whatever crazy weather Waterton throws at you.
Waterton is such a vibe and so incredible and I can’t wait to share some of my fave spots there with you.
The Bear’s Hump trail leaves from the Visitor’s Centre and is a short and steep hike that looks down over the lakes and has great views! It can be really really busy during the day in the summer but this would be a great option for a sunset or sunrise hiking elopement if you want something close to town, short, and really pretty!
Hike Length: 2.4km round trip
Elevation Gain: 217m
Dogs Allowed: Yes, on leash
Suitable for Kids: Yes
Wheelchair Accessible: No
Small wedding ceremonies are permitted along Upper Waterton Lake, including Driftwood Beach and Cameron Bay. The shoreline offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and is an easily accessible location. You can see the Prince of Wales hotel off in the distance overlooking the lake too. This would be perfect if you wanted to have have a sunrise hiking vow exchange and then come back down to the lake for a ceremony after with friends and family.
Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, you can explore around outside and take photos at the viewpoint in front of the hotel. This is an iconic Waterton spot and shouldn’t be missed! If you’re wanting a more private location, this likely isn’t for you but you could try going for sunrise or sunset for a quieter experience!
There are plenty of day use areas (like Hay Barn Day Use) that offer picnic tables and fire pits and would be a great spot for your ceremony. The fields around Waterton are so nice with wide open native grassland and mountains towering above them.
